Maha Shivratri is one of the most significant festivals dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that on this night, Lord Shiva performed the Tandava Nritya, symbolizing creation, preservation, and destruction. Additionally, it marks the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Devotees observe fasts, perform night-long vigils, and engage in Shiva Puja to seek his blessings for prosperity, happiness, and moksha (liberation).
hivratri Puja Vidhi (Worship Procedure)
1. Sankalp (Vow & Preparation)
- Wake up early in Brahma Muhurta (pre-dawn) and take a holy bath.
- Wear clean or traditional clothes (preferably white or light-colored).
- Sit in a quiet place and take a vow to observe fasting and perform Shiva Puja with devotion.
2. Fasting (Vrat) & Devotion
- Devotees observe a strict fast (Nirjala – without water, or Phalahar – consuming fruits and milk).
- Recite Shiva Mantras and listen to Shiva Purana or Maha Shivratri Katha.
3. Shivling Abhishek (Sacred Bathing of Shivling)
The most important ritual of Maha Shivratri is the Shivling Abhishek, Devotees offer:
- Water or Milk – for purity
- Honey – for sweetness in life
- Curd (Yogurt) – for prosperity
- Ghee (Clarified Butter) – for good health
- Sandalwood Paste – for peace
- Bael Leaves (Bilva Patra) – to seek Shiva’s blessings
4. Offering & Worship (Puja Samagri)
After the Abhishek, devotees offer:
- Flowers (especially Datura, Bel Patra, Lotus)
- Fruits (Banana, Coconut, Dates, Ber, etc.)
- Bhasma (Vibhuti) – symbolizes renunciation
- Incense sticks & Deepak (Oil Lamp) – for light and positivity
5. Chanting Mantras & Bhajans
- Recite “Om Namah Shivaya” continuously throughout the night.
- Chant Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra for health and longevity.
- Sing Shiva Bhajans and participate in Jagran (night-long worship).
